Most people picture Notion AI as a chat window in the sidebar. That's one piece of it, and probably the smallest. Here's the actual breakdown.
Notion Agent: it does the work, not just the talking
This is the part that surprises people most. Notion Agent doesn't just draft a paragraph when you ask: it can look across your workspace and connected apps, then create or edit content on your behalf, pages, databases, charts, and more.
You can customize how it presents itself and give it instructions and "skills" that shape its behavior, so it acts less like a generic chatbot and more like a teammate you've trained. There's also a built-in checkpoint: you can require the Agent to show you its plan before it executes, rather than letting it make changes unsupervised. Worth turning on if you're handing it anything that matters.
Enterprise Search: it looks everywhere you already look
Enterprise Search is what makes Notion AI useful beyond your own pages. It searches your Notion workspace, your connected apps (Slack, Google Drive, and others via Notion AI Connectors), and the open web, then assembles an answer from whichever sources actually hold the information. You can also switch between different AI models depending on what you're doing.
Research Mode: for questions that need real legwork
Available on Business and Enterprise plans, Research Mode is a toggle in the Notion AI sidebar built for open-ended, complex questions, the kind you'd normally spend an afternoon gathering sources for yourself. Think "write a report on X" or "check whether Y actually holds up," drawing on both your workspace and the web.
AI Meeting Notes: the meeting, transcribed and searchable
Still in beta, this feature transcribes your meetings and summarizes them automatically. It works with any video-call tool, keeps the output in the same place as everything else in Notion, and because it's Notion, the transcript stays searchable later exactly like any other page.
In-page AI and AI blocks: help right on the page
This is the writing-assistance layer most people mean when they say "AI in Notion." Select text or hit space on a page, and it can rewrite a section, fix grammar, change tone, translate the whole page, or draft something from a blank slate.
AI blocks go a step further: you drop one into a page, give it a standing instruction, and it generates content you can regenerate on demand. Handy for a recurring status summary that refreshes itself every time someone clicks Generate.
Notion AI for databases: less flashy, actually useful
Databases get their own AI layer. It can build one from scratch for you, properties and relations to other databases included, auto-fill property values on existing pages (summaries, keywords, categorization), and write or edit formulas, including inside automations. If you've been avoiding a formula property because the syntax looks intimidating, this is the part to try first.
Which plan unlocks what
Full access to Notion AI, meaning ongoing, unlimited use of everything above, is reserved for Business or Enterprise plans. On Free or Plus, you get a limited number of free responses: enough to try it, not enough to build a workflow on top of it. Image generation (still in beta) is also Business-and-Enterprise-only.
There's a keyboard shortcut, Shift + Cmd/Ctrl + J, that opens Notion AI from anywhere, not just from inside a page. On iOS, you can trigger it through Siri, Spotlight, the Shortcuts app, or the Action Button on recent iPhones.
