"Notion AI" is not a single feature. It's the label Notion uses for six distinct things, each with its own scope, plan requirements, and practical limits. Understanding which feature does what takes less than five minutes and saves a lot of misplaced expectations.
Notion Agent: the conversational layer that searches your workspace
Notion Agent is what most people think of when they hear "Notion AI." It's the chat interface where you ask a question in plain language and get an answer grounded in your actual workspace content. Unlike a generic AI chatbot, it doesn't rely solely on its training data: it first searches your pages, retrieves the relevant ones, and generates its answer from that material.
What it can do: answer questions about your workspace content, summarize pages, draft documents based on your existing material, create and update pages on your behalf (the "agentic" part).
What it cannot do: access the internet, look up real-time data outside your workspace, or read content you don't have permission to see. If a page isn't in your workspace or isn't accessible to you, Notion Agent cannot use it.
Plan requirement: full Notion Agent access requires Business or Enterprise. Free and Plus plans include a limited number of complimentary AI responses.
Enterprise Search: your workspace plus external sources
Enterprise Search extends Notion Agent's reach beyond your Notion workspace to connected external tools: Google Drive, Slack, and others via connectors. When you ask a question, the system searches both your Notion pages and the connected sources simultaneously.
This is the feature to reach for when your team's information is split across multiple tools and you want a single entry point for search. The connector configuration is separate from the main AI settings, and each connector requires its own authorization.
Plan requirement: Business and Enterprise. Enterprise Search requires connector setup by an admin before it's usable.
Research Mode: web search built into Notion Agent
Research Mode lets Notion Agent search the web and combine external sources with your workspace content in a single response. The system cites its sources, so you can verify what came from where.
Useful for: competitive research, market context, anything where you want to combine what your team already knows with what's publicly available without switching tools. Not a replacement for a dedicated research tool when depth matters.
Plan requirement: Business and Enterprise.
AI Meeting Notes: transcription and structured summaries
AI Meeting Notes joins your video calls (Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams), transcribes the conversation in real time, and generates a structured summary directly into a Notion page: key decisions, action items, participants.
The note appears in your workspace automatically once the meeting ends. You can configure where it lands (which page or database) and who has access to it. Participants are notified that the meeting is being recorded, which is the detail most teams forget to communicate before the first session.
Plan requirement: Business and Enterprise. Can be restricted by admins to specific members.
Inline AI: writing assistance inside any page
Inline AI is the AI assistance built directly into the Notion editor. You can trigger it with the space bar or the slash command menu: it can draft content, summarize a selection, translate, change tone, fix grammar, or continue writing from where you left off.
Unlike Notion Agent, inline AI doesn't search your workspace for context. It works with the text already visible on the page. This makes it faster for writing tasks and less suited for questions that require finding information across your workspace.
Plan requirement: available on all plans within the complimentary AI response limit; unlimited on Business and Enterprise.
AI for databases: autofill, categorization, extraction
AI for databases adds an AI property type to any Notion database. Each row can have a property whose value is generated automatically from other properties in the same row: summarize a long-form field into a short label, extract a category from a description, translate a field, score a lead based on other data.
The key constraint: each AI property works within a single row. It reads other properties of that row and produces a derived value. It doesn't cross-reference other rows or external sources. For multi-row analysis or pattern detection across a dataset, Notion Agent is the right tool.
Plan requirement: Business and Enterprise for unlimited use; limited on Free and Plus.
Which plan unlocks what
The practical summary:
- Free and Plus: a limited number of complimentary AI responses across all features. Enough to evaluate, not enough to build into a workflow.
- Business: full access to Notion Agent, Enterprise Search, Research Mode, AI Meeting Notes, inline AI, and AI for databases. This is where Notion AI becomes a daily tool rather than an occasional demo.
- Enterprise: everything in Business, plus zero data retention with AI providers, DLP content alerts, and admin-controlled plan approval for AI features.
If you're deciding whether Notion AI is worth upgrading for, the question to ask is: which of these six features would change how your team works, and is it available at the plan you're on? The answer is usually Business for most teams that want AI as part of their workflow rather than as a feature to try.
